Learn why quick weight loss attempts are hindering your progress — and what to do instead!
If you’re a woman over 40 and trying to shed unwanted pounds through a quick fix, you’re missing the mark. Your long-term results are going to be less than impressive. Here’s why:
You’re going to lose more muscle than fat. This is a problem for numerous reasons.
As we age, we naturally begin losing muscle mass. If you’re not intentional about your protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake, your muscle mass will fade even faster. If you’re trying to lose weight too quickly, and you’re not focusing on your protein, carbohydrate, and fat intake, you guessed it – you can kiss your muscle mass goodbye.
So why is maintaining your muscle mass so important when it comes to your weight loss efforts?
When you drastically restrict your nutrition during weight loss attempts, your metabolism naturally slows down. Your metabolism is responsible for converting the food you eat into the energy. You need energy to power everything you do – from moving to thinking. If your nutritional intake is too low, your metabolism doesn’t have enough food (aka, fuel) to provide extra energy. This extra energy is needed to maintain your muscle mass or burn fat. Your metabolism simply wants to keep you alive at that point. And guess what increases your metabolic rate? Muscle.
When you participate in an extreme diet, the number on the scale may decrease. You will likely losing muscle instead of fat. The problem is exacerbated after you begin eating normally again. This is because at that point, your metabolism often can’t catch back up – which is why women gain the weight back or even worse, gain more weight than before. You’ve lost muscle and you’ve damaged your metabolism.
If any of this sounds familiar, now you know why!
You’ll be happy to know that all is not lost just because you’re aging. When you focus on body composition changes instead of to weight loss, you’ll experience fat loss while also preserving your muscle and metabolism! This occurs through consuming the appropriate amounts of protein, carbs, and fats, combined with a strategic fitness plan.
There’s a huge difference between just wanting to lose weight vs. wanting to change your body composition. Focusing on losing weight is not the answer for all the reasons listed above. All women, especially the 40 and over ladies, should be mindful of supporting their metabolism. We should also focus on preserving/growing muscle mass. These two components are critical if you want to thrive through the aging process!
Are you willing to be open-minded and do you BELIEVE your body CAN change? If you answered yes, I’m here to give you strategies that work so you can stop spinning your wheels and step into the strongest and healthiest version of yourself.
