By now you’ve made every attempt to cut calories and make healthier food choices but nothing seems to work. So what gives? The key? Stop Starving Yourself Because You Don’t Know How To Eat Healthy.
The truth is, cutting calories can make you lose weight. But knowing the type of calories you’re eating is the real game changer!
Sustainable fat loss is less about calorie counting, and more about macro counting.
“Macros” is short for macronutrients. Macros are simply carbs, fats, and protein, and every single thing you eat falls under one of these three categories of nutrients.
The trick is sticking to whole food carbs, fats, and protein. These are necessary for your body to function optimally, especially if you’re trying to reach specific health + fitness goals.
Eating the right amount of each macro will help you optimize your metabolism, increase your energy, and naturally turn your body into a fat burning machine!
Whole food macros are unprocessed and found in their natural state. A good way to remember this is to ask, “Did this carb, fat, or protein come from the ground?” or “Did it have a mother?”. If the answer is yes, then it’s most likely a whole food carb, fat, or protein.
No, donuts never had a mother….But that doesn’t mean you can never eat donuts. All foods can be eaten with intention, but I’ll save this topic for a future post.
Examples of whole food macros:
Carbs: No these are not the DEVIL! (carbs fall under two main categories):
1. Non-starchy carbs: berries and non-root vegetables
2. Starchy carbs: other fruits like bananas, oranges, and apples. Root vegetables like corn, carrots, and potatoes, and other carbs such as rice, oats, beans, quinoa, legumes, and whole grains.
Fats: egg yolks, avocado, fatty meats like salmon or steak, peanut butter, nuts, olive oil, and clean salad dressings
Proteins: egg whites, chicken, seafood, steak, pork, and turkey
True fat loss is triggered when you’re able to maximize the function of your metabolism AND you’re able to support your hormones. This is possible when you eat enough of the right combination of food-not just “calories in general”.
If you’ve cut calories and struggled in the past to lose weight AND keep it off, this is where macro counting becomes your game winning strategy.
Macro counting is all about promoting balance in your body for optimal results.
The most accurate way to do this is to start by determining your goals. Are you trying to burn fat while building muscle or do you want to maintain your weight or even gain weight, while changing your body composition?
Your specific macro goals will be based on the results you want to experience as well as your activity level.
For best results you’ll want to track your macros each day in a tracking app but if you’re a beginner to macros or just someone that wants to count macros intuitively, one of the easiest things you can do is use the balanced macro plate method.
This is something you can do ANYWHERE!
Balanced Macro Plate Method:
Navigating health & wellness can get tricky, but if you’re ready to reach your goals faster and more effectively, macro based nutrition should be at the top of your list.
Many times people lose their edge when they’re solely focused on cutting calories, in fact this strategy typically leads to bigger issues!
Don’t let macro counting intimidate you!! Start with the simple balanced macro plate method to help you get started.
Counting macros is proven to be a vital tool in reversing the symptoms of burnout, breaking through stubburn weight loss plateaus, improving energy levels, preventing disease, and managing peri/menopause symptoms.
